There are many requirements for a person to be licensed to practice law in the State of Indiana. Generally, each attorney has completed a four (4) year undergraduate degree from a college or university, typically has excelled in academic and other pursuits, and has graduated from a law school (usually requiring three (3) years of education on a full-time basis) for a total of seven (7) years of post high school education. Attorneys generally receive a doctor of jurisprudence degree from a law school. In order to be licensed to practice law in Indiana the applicant must have successfully obtained a law degree, had been found to be of good moral character after having been investigated, and having passed a two (2) day comprehensive examination. In order to maintain a license to practice law an attorney must pay annual registration fees and must complete required continuing education each year. Attorneys are also required to comply with numerous ethical rules. Violations can result in various degrees of punishment, including permanent revocation of the license to practice law. The annual fees that attorneys pay finances the operation of the Indiana Disciplinary Commission that considers and investigates complaints against attorneys.

Attorneys perform a variety of important roles in our society. Attorneys become judges, prosecutors, public defenders, litigators, corporate attorneys, governmental attorneys, and private attorneys. There are many areas of law such as criminal law, constitutional law, family law, administrative law, tax law, tort law, real estate law, probate, trust, and estate law, guardianship law, Medicaid law, Social Security law, worker's compensation law, contract law, real estate law, business law, adoption law, civil rights law, bankruptcy law, elder law, environmental law, immigration and naturalization law, employment law, trade mark and copyright law, securities law, etc.
